During the mandatory training course, you have to pass the knowledge test in an SAAQ service centre. To be eligible for the test, you have to have held a learner’s licence for at least 10 months and have made an appointment.

The purpose of this test is to check if you can apply your knowledge about regulations, road signs and traffic signals, and behaviour to adopt in various situations.

If you fail the test, you have to wait at least 28 days before taking the knowledge test again. If you pass the test, you are still required to take all of the theoretical modules and do all of the in-car sessions of the driving course.

Quebec Driving Knowledge Practice Test

To pass the SAAQ Driving Knowledge Test, which concerns the Highway Safety Code, road signs, traffic signals and techniques of driving a passenger vehicle. To obtain your driver’s licence, you must pass the theoretical and practical classes given by a driving school accredited by the Association québécoise des transports (AQTr) and also pass the SAAQ knowledge and road tests.

The Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec or SAAQ (English: Quebec Automobile Insurance Corporation) is a Quebec crown corporation responsible for licensing drivers and vehicles in the province and providing public auto insurance which insures all drivers, passengers, pedestrians, bicyclists and motorcyclists involved in road collisions whether or not they are at fault (no-fault insurance). Coverage, however, is limited to personal injuries — damage to property is covered by private insurers.

The SAAQ also administers Quebec’s driver’s licenses and vehicle licence plates (analogous to the DMVs of many U.S. States), and seeks to prevent road accidents, particularly through advertising campaigns in the media and in schools.

Basic Requirements

To obtain a driver’s licence for a passenger vehicle, a person must be at least age 16. The written consent of a parental authority ( father, mother, guardian) is required for persons under age 18.

You also have to present two pieces of identification. The first must be from the Directeur de l’état civil du Québec or a civil authority recognized elsewhere in Canada, a certificate of Canadian citizenship, a legal document indicating Canadian citizenship or a Permanent Resident Card or a Canadian passport. The second piece of identification can be a provincial health insurance card.

Taxi driver’s Permit

In order to obtain a taxi driver’s permit, which is required to drive a taxi, a person must hold a class 4C or higher (1, 2, 3, 4A or 4B) driver’s licence.

To obtain a Class 4C driver’s license, a person must:

  • have a minimum of one year of driving experience as a holder of a class 5 driver’s licence;
  • comply with the standards for driver health;
  • have the required knowledge to drive a taxi;
  • pay $14 for the issuance of a new driver’s license.

Depending on the cylinder capacity of the motorcycle you want to operate, you must hold a driver’s licence of one of the following classes:
>> Class 6A: All motorcycles
>> Class 6B: Motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of 400 cc or less
>> Class 6C: Motorcycles with a cylinder capacity of 125 cc or less

SAAQ Driver’s Handbook

This is a condensed version of the Highway Safety Code and the regulations made under it. It presents the main requirements of law, covers the standards for driving a passenger vehicle, and gives practical advice.

Part of the learning comes from reading the study guides, Driving a Passenger Vehicle and the Driver’s Handbook, and the supplemental material included in the Road Access Binder for aspiring drivers.

The Driver’s Handbook is an indispensable tool for preparing for your tests to obtain a driver’s licence. Other documents are also essential for your learning process, depending on the class of licence you want to obtain.

To complete your driver’s education, you can also:

  • Read the Driver’s Handbook to find out about road signs and traffic signals;
  • Take the online quiz, available on the website of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec at www.saaq.gouv.qc.ca, to check your knowledge.
